From Toxic to Timeless: How to Create a Safer Space

For many households, “clean” has long meant the crisp scent of bleach, pine, or floral sprays. However, those same products often contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good. Many conventional cleaners release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These chemicals evaporate into the air and can irritate the nasal passages and lungs, triggering inflammation and headaches for sensitive individuals.

Keeping a clean, healthy home shouldn’t come at the expense of your wellbeing. As awareness grows, more people are discovering that traditional, time-tested cleaning methods — made with simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and natural soap — can be just as effective, without the side effects.

These natural alternatives don’t just reduce indoor air pollution; they also simplify your cleaning routine and minimize waste.

Here are some timeless, toxin-free swaps to help you create a safer, more balanced home environment:

Whole House Essentials:

  • All-purpose spray: On a spray bottle, add 16 oz water, 1.5 tsp Sal Suds, 1/4 tsp tree tea essential oils. and Shake well. Clean counter tops, stove and sink.
  • Floors: 1 tsp Sal Suds to 1 gallon of water
  • Mirror and glass cleaner: On a spray bottle, add 1 cup distilled water, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 tbsp rubbing alcohol, 5–10 drops essential oil (optional, for a light natural scent — lemon, lavender, or eucalyptus work well)

Kitchen Swaps:

  • Dish Soap: Combine 1/2 cup liquid castile soap with 1 cup hot or warm water and 10 drops of essential oil. Let cool, then pour into a dispenser.
  • Oven Cleaner: Sprinkle baking soda and a few sprays of vinegar, let sit, then scrub. Wipe clean.

Bathroom:

  • Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle 1 cup baking soda around the inside of the toilet bowl. Pour 1 cup white vinegar slowly — it will fizz and help lift stains. Add 10–15 drops essential oil (tea tree, eucalyptus, or lavender for natural antibacterial properties). Let sit for 10–15 minutes. Scrub with a toilet brush, then flush.
  • Tub Cleaner: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup liquid castile soap, 10–15 drops essential oil and a few tablespoons of water (as needed) until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to the tub with a sponge or cloth. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then scrub in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  • Drain Freshener: Sprinkle baking soda, add a couple splashes of vinegar for it to sizzle then rinse with boiling water.

 Laundry Room Swaps

  • Laundry Detergent: In a large jar, add ½ cup epsom salt, 1 ½ cups sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), 1 ½ cups sodium carbonate (washing soda), ¼ cup sea salt, 25 drops of essential oils (optional), and mix well. Add 2 tbsp of the mixture into the laundry machine drum before adding clothes, and run on your desired cycle. Always shake the jar before use, as contents may settle.
  • Softer: Skip the synthetic softeners and opt for white vinegar with a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I promise your clothes won’t smell like vinegar!). Simply pour the vinegar mixture into the fabric softener compartment of your washer.
